Overview
Cloud Forest School students feel a keen sense
of responsibility as stewards of the forest. Along with that they
become aware of the fragility as well as the biological significance
of the cloud forest. In addition to concentrating on traditional
subjects such as writing, math, science, and reading, the school
incorporates an environmental component into each classroom. Each
class spends at least an hour a week outside and there are opportunities
for teachers to incorporate the physical surroundings into other
aspects of the bilingual curriculum from science to art to math.
ESL Program
Nine students are currently enrolled in our new ESL program. We started this program to invite older students from the community to become immersed in our school culture while teaching them the English language. Some of the main focuses of the class are improving vocabulary and grammar and advancing their levels in reading and writing. The curriculum is very hands-on and as a part of their human body project, students participated in a yoga class taught in English.
Art Classes
With the completion of our art room, we now have the opportunity to offer art classes twice a week to our high school students and once a week for our elementary students. The recently organized Art Commission is working to provide more art classes to our elementary students. In addition, some of our high school students are looking to start a student-run newspaper here at the school. The donated kick-wheel and kiln have been great additions to the school and we look forward to offering ceramic classes to students and teachers this year.
